What Is a Pet Emergency?

It can be hard to know whether your pet needs urgent care or just time to rest. To help you recognize pet emergencies, we’ve created a list of some of the more common cases we see:

  • Bleeding that won’t stop with compression
  • Bleeding from the eyes, ears, nose, or mouth
  • Vomiting/diarrhea for more than 24 hours
  • Blood in vomit, urine, or stool
  • Encounter or fight with a wild animal
  • Straining to urinate/defecate
  • Traumatic injury such as being hit by a car
  • Sitting with head pressed against a wall or other surface
  • Ingestion of a toxic substance
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chronic coughing
  • Seizures
  • No eating or drinking for 24 hours or more
  • Bloated abdomen that feels hard to the touch
  • Unable to walk or stand
  • Fever (ears and nose feel hot)
  • Eye injuries
