What Is a Pet Emergency?
It can be hard to know whether your pet needs urgent care or just time to rest. To help you recognize pet emergencies, we’ve created a list of some of the more common cases we see:
- Bleeding that won’t stop with compression
- Bleeding from the eyes, ears, nose, or mouth
- Vomiting/diarrhea for more than 24 hours
- Blood in vomit, urine, or stool
- Encounter or fight with a wild animal
- Straining to urinate/defecate
- Traumatic injury such as being hit by a car
- Sitting with head pressed against a wall or other surface
- Ingestion of a toxic substance
- Difficulty breathing
- Chronic coughing
- Seizures
- No eating or drinking for 24 hours or more
- Bloated abdomen that feels hard to the touch
- Unable to walk or stand
- Fever (ears and nose feel hot)
- Eye injuries
